Danvers High School’s George Merry took advantage of his course knowledge and won the Northeastern Conference Open at Kernwood, where he has worked the last several years as a caddy and/or bag room staffer. The 6-foot 6 Merry, a key on the Falcons’ basketball team this winter after the Falcons surprising run in the Eastern Mass. tournament, topped the field with a 78, one shot better than Saugus’ Cam Norton and Winthrop’s Patrick Brogan. Kudos to Kernwood’s Frank Dully for winning the New England PGA Massachusetts Chapter title at wind-swept Vesper on October 17 with a one over par 73. He matched the 73 Scott Hickey of Cyprien Keys shot, thanks to playing the last 11 holes in one under and the last five holes, including the one playoff hole, in two under. [Read more →]

Lots of congratulatory hugs and kisses to send out, starting with Turner Hill’s M.J. O’Neil, Bellevue’s Mike Tarpey and old friend Kirk Hanefeld, the former Beverly resident and golf director at Salem Country Club. First Hanefeld. Great to see the three-time NEPGA champ post a wire-to-wire victory Sunday (October 9) at the (take a deep breath) Senior PGA Professional National Championship in Aldie, Virginia, his second such triumph in four years. Though he did it the hard way. Kirk staggered to a closing 75, but delivered when it mattered most. Trailing playing partner Ken Martin by a shot coming down the par-5 72nd hole, Hanefeld wedged his approach to 18 inches after a desired spin-back, and made his putt for birdie, while Martin bunkered his tee shot, wedged his fourth shot over the green and made a four-footer for bogey six.
Hanefeld, 55, led Martin by eight shots after the opening round and finished at six under 282 (66-67-74-75) to Floridian Martin’s 74-66-69-74 for 283. No one else in the 264-player field finished under par.
“It wasn’t pretty, but who am I to complain?” said a relieved Hanefeld, who had set the tournament record with his blistering 11-under start for 36 holes. “I don’t feel like I won a golf tournament after the way I played these last two rounds, but golf is a wacky game.” His 75 Sunday was the highest closing round by a winner in this showcase event for senior PGA pros.
Hanefeld, who has played in only three Champions Tour events in 2011, winning $17,000 and change, won $20,000, a spot in next year’s Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores in Benton, Harbor, Michigan and receives an exemption into the final stage qualifying for Champions Tour Q-School Nov. 14-20 at TPC Scottsdale.

After helping lead her U.S. squad to a victory in the Curtis Cup at Essex CC, Lexi Thompson has already picked up her first LPGA Tour victory.
Her 4-0-1 record at the Curtis Cup Match at Essex County Club in Manchester in June 2010 was all we North Shore observers needed to see. We were convinced 15-year-old Lexi Thompson was on her way to LPGA Tour stardom. [Read more →]
