Richardson, Anderson, Carter and Tobin round out the Top 5 Women


2. Karen Richardson, Haverhill CC
Once again proving the adage that some players, like wine, get better with age, the 56-year-old Richardson became the oldest winner of the Anne Marie Tobin/WGAM Player of the Year Award for accumulating the most points during her 2004 competitive season… Flint, Mich. native won WGAM Senior title with a 73 at Franklin, won the rain-shortened Grace Keyes Cup with 72, placed seventh at New England Amateur, tied for forth at Baker Trophy, lost in first round of Mass. Amateur and won rain-shortened Endicott Cup individual title… moved to Massachusetts in 1981 after becoming youngest woman to win Flint City Championship at 15 and qualifying for USGA Women’s Public Links… Played at Crystal Springs between 1981 and 1991 before moving to Haverhill… 1984 and 1997 Mass Amateur champion, 1999 Women’s Mass Open winner… Retired Methuen teacher-coach who continues to umpire softball and referee basketball and play softball and tennis when not golfing.
3. Lisa Anderson, Ferncroft CC
A Georgia native, Anderson, a Ferncroft member since 1994, qualified for the USGA Women’s Mid-Amateur in Knoxville, Tenn., and reached the second round of match play, her third appearance in the national tournament… She advanced to the second round of match play at the Mass. Amateur, tied for fifth at the Keyes Cup and won the Baker Trophy event… the Georgia Tech grad moved to the Boston area 15 years ago to work for MIT-Lincoln Laboratory as an engineer… A Stoneham resident and manufacturers’ sales rep, she hopes in 2005 to show more consistency in her swing and her scoring… “I’d like to shoot in the 60s. I’ve never done that,” she said.
4. Diane Carter, Wenham CC
Finished second to Richardson in the Keyes Cup standings with 73 points… Lost in semifinals of President’s Cup flight at State Amateur… Like Anderson, seems to be improving with age as 47th birthday approaches… 14-time club champ at Wenham CC…Led Wenham CC team to a record fifth WGAM First Cup last spring… Surgical nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital…Enjoys bike riding and fitness regimens…Did not begin playing the game until she was 26… three-sport standout at Danvers High… softball and field hockey player at Westfield State College… Looking forward to playing three of the WGAM majors on her favorite courses in 2005 – Myopia (Keyes), Kittansett (Baker Trophy) and Winchester (Championship).
5. Anne Marie Tobin, Bellevue CC
In 2004, lost in the quarterfinals of Amateur Championship while playing the most limited competitive schedule since she began taking part in WGAM events 25 years ago… Eight-time WGAM champion… Has won WGAM Mother-Daughter division five times with 12-year-old Abby… Just concluded two-year term as president of the Ouimet Scholarship Fund… 48-year-old serves as general counsel for the New England PGA…Former WGAM president… Reached the quarterfinals of the 1990 U.S. Women’s Amateur and 1991 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur… Hopes to play more competition in 2005, including a run at her ninth State Amateur at Winchester… Husband Jim is head professional at Bellevue and is in the second year of his two-year term as president of the New England PGA.
