Gilmartin, Acquaviva, Cole, and Johnson round out the Top 5 Men


2. John Gilmartin, Indian Ridge CC and Renaissance GC
Won 2004 Ouimet Memorial, keyed by a holed wedge shot for eagle-two on the 16th hole of the final round at Woodland… Finished ninth in Dick Haskell MGA Player of the Year points standing… Has reached quarters or semis in four of the last five Mass. Amateurs…Two-time winner of Rogers Invitational… 33-year-old is VP of Valley Associates, management company that runs 450-team Merrimack Valley Youth Hockey organization… Andover resident played golf at St. John’s Prep and Colgate… Played in U.S. Amateur at Pumpkin Ridge and USGA Mid-Amateur at The Homestead… No. 1 goal in 2005 is Mass Amateur at Essex.
3. Tim Acquaviva, Andover CC
Finished sixth in the New England Amateur and 22nd at the Mass. Open in 2004… Qualified for U.S. Amateur, but missed cut for match play… Broke course record while shooting 73-67-140 in U.S. Amateur qualifier at Golf Club of New England… 21-year-old is completing junior year at Rollins College… Grew up in Connecticut before family moved to Andover when he was 14… graduate of St. John’s Prep… Spends summers playing at Cape Arundel in Kennebunkport, where parents have summer home… Hopes to try graduate program at Rollins before turning pro and chasing PGA Tour dream.
4. Mike Cole,Larry Gannon GC
Runner-up at 2004 Mass. Amateur, putting up a gallant battle before losing, 5 and 4, to heavily-favored Frank Vana in title match… At 49, was one of the oldest finalists in Amateur history… Seven-time Gannon club champ… Life-long Lynn resident… shared Gannon course record of 64 for many years… Won 2003 NEPGA Pro-Am Championship with Chris Carter… Placed third to Jim Hallet at 1982 Tournament of Club Champions at The Country Club… Appeared out of contention to reach match play at 2004 Mass. Amateur after making nine on par-five ninth hole on first day of qualifying, but played last 27 holes in even-par to place 21st among the 32 qualifiers for match play… Primed for 2005 Amateur at Essex.
5. Charlie Johnson, Ferncroft
Qualifed for 2004 Mass. Amateur with 74 at Andover CC, then shot 147 to match Cole and reach match play at Taconic before losing in opening round to Spitz, 4 and 3… Has played in three of last four Mass. Amateurs and hopes to make it 4-for-5 at Essex… Helped Ferncroft win Sherrill Cup for first time in 2004 with teammates John Hogan, Keith Rourke and Jim Kehoe… 39-year-old is another St. John’s Prep product, as are brothers Don and Kevin… Co-owner of Johnson and Rohan Insurance based in Lynnfield… Left local competition in 1987, rejoined the battles in 1999… Made cut at 2003 Ouimet Memorial… Has qualified for Mass. Mid-Am four successive years… Became father in 2004 for the first time to son Cooper.
